I went downstairs and told my husband: “The kids put a hole in the wall. A big one. M is really upset. She’s working up the courage to come tell you herself.”

We had two choices:

1. Yell and make her feel smaller than she already did.
2. Accept her — even in her mistake — and realize how brave she was to come to us at all.
